Shantilal
Shah’s fingers on the tabla create the right accompaniment
as well as a mirror like image for the melody. He is one
of the torch bearers of the Banares Gharana and is a worthy
disciple of Pandit Suresh Talwalkar. His basic taalim was
under Pandit Mahadev Prasad Mishra of Banaras.
During
his initial years as a Tabla player, Shantilal Shah remained
a gold medallist from the Sangeet Natak Academy of Lucknow,
and also won the National scholarship awarded by the Govt.
of India. A sangeet Prabhakar from the Prayaag Sangeet Samiti
of Allahabad, he is also a graded artiste of the All India
Radio & Television.
For
last several years, Shantilal Shah has been performing allover
India and many western and Asian countries with the greatest
names in Indian Classical music like Pt.Jasraj, Late Pt.Jeetendra
Abhisheki, Pt.Rajan-Sajan Mishra, Pt.Ulhas Kashalkar, Laxmi
Shankar, Ud. Sujaat Khan, Veena Sahasrabuddhe. Padma Talwalkar,
Arati Ankalikar, Suman Ghosh, and dancers like Rohini Bhate
and Shama Bhate to name a few. Shantilal
Shah is also a crowd-puller in the fusion-music concerts
by virtue of his natural ability to re-create the right
kind of blend between Tabla and Western drums. He has done
several successful shows in the field along with celebrity
Western musicians.
